Dr Dharani Keyan is a clinical psychologist who values working empathically with clients to empower them in taking an active role to overcome their psychological concerns, and in turn navigate a path towards a more fulfilled life. She has particular clinical interest and proficiency in treating adult clients with anxiety and post-traumatic stress, where she draws from her PhD and research work in trauma to inform her clinical practice.  

Dharani has extensive experience in assisting individuals with a range of psychological concerns including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to motor-vehicle accidents, physical assaults, sexual assault/rape, and/or natural disasters 

  • Low mood and depression 

  • Worry and generalised anxiety 

  • Perfectionism 

  • Social anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Health or illness anxiety 

  • Obsessive compulsive concerns

Dharani has experience working in diverse settings including in-patient and outpatient hospital settings, research treatment clinics, and universities. She is experienced in working with professionals, tertiary and post-graduate students, and individuals from varied cultural backgrounds. She also works with emergency service workers including police, firefighters, paramedics and military personnel who have experienced traumatic events through the course of their work.  

In addition to private practice, Dharani works at the Traumatic Stress Clinic, a research and treatment clinic that provides cutting-edge, evidence-based treatments for those affected by traumatic events.  She is also a Research Fellow in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales, and a consultant for the World Health Organisation. In these roles, she is actively involved in developing innovative treatment programs for individuals who experience difficulties coping with anxiety and traumatic events. She has published her research in scientific journals and regularly presents at national and international conferences. 


Dharani holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Clinical Psychology, and Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from the University of New South Wales, Sydney. She holds full registration and endorsement as a clinical psychologist (PSY0002099327) from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). She is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA), the Australian Association of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (AACBT), and Anxiety Practitioners Network (APN).

Dharani’s approach focusses on providing best-practice science-based treatments that is sensitive to her clients’ needs. She primarily practices within a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, as scientific studies show that CBT is the most effective treatment available for anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress related difficulties. Treatment may be complemented with other approaches including: 

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

  • Mindfulness Based Therapies 

  • Schema Therapy

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
